BRIEF BACKGROUND OF THE CENTRE AND OBJECTIVES OF ITS ESTABLISHMENT:

Agro-Economic Research Centre, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam is one of 15 Centres set up by Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India, to carry out research in agricultural economics in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha. It was established on 21st February, 1968. The Centre has opened portals of research in agriculture and rural development. It has endeavoured on several research areas which are very essential to policy formulation for Government of India, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Government of Telangana and Government of Odisha. Thus it has played a crucial role in the Policy formulation of agricultural and rural development for nearly five decades.

THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE CENTRE ARE:

  • To carry out continuous study of changes in the rural economy and economic conditions of Agriculturists by means of surveys of a number of selected villages every year in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha.
  • To conduct adhoc investigations into the problems in which the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare is specially interested pertaining to Agriculture.
  • To carry out research work on problems relating to Agricultural Economics of the country and
  • To give technical advice to the Government of India and the State Governments concerned on such issues as with mutual agreement may be referred to the Centre.
  • RESEARCH AND OTHER ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTRE:

    Initially village surveys used to contribute the bulk of the research work of the Centre. However, in the early 1970s the focus shifted to problem oriented studies of immediately policy implications to the Government of India and the State Governments. The research output of the Centre is much extensive and varied. Its findings and recommendations have helped the Central and State governments in their policy formulation and some of them are relevant even today. It covered a broad spectrum of subjects including regional planning, crop production, input use and supplies, marketing, target group oriented programmes, institutions, infrastructure development, tribal socio-economic conditions and special problems of the tribals etc. In the last 53 years, the Centre has brought out 156 research reports on various subjects. These may be grouped as follows: A. Area studies B. Planning studies C. Studies relating to specific overall development programmes D. Studies of target group-oriented programmes E. Crop Programme Studies F. Input Studies G. Miscellaneous studies H. Tribal area studies I. Village studies These include many sponsored collaborative research studies with special financial assistance. The sponsoring institutions include the Ministry of Home Government of India, the Ministry of Rural Manpower, Government of India; the State Government of Andhra Pradesh; the Overseas Development Institute at the University of Reading, U.K; the ICRISAT; the World Bank; the Agricultural Finance Corporation; the Andhra Pradesh Scheduled Castes Co-operative Finance Corporation; etc.
