PROFILE
The Centre for SAARC Studies, formerly the Centre for Studies on Cooperative Possibilities in South Asia, was established in Andhra University in May 1987 with the financial assistance of the UGC under the ‘Area Study Programme’, and started functioning from the year 1988. The Centre is mandated to undertake multidisciplinary research studies on South Asian/SAARC countries - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan – both at national and regional levels. The Centre has completed five plan / phase periods and is now on extension towards the sixth phase. During these phases, the Centre has been working on the thrust areas, viz.; economic, political and security cooperation, and ethnic issues on SAARC countries and is now striving to establish a strong research base on the SAARC region.

The Centre has envisaged mainly two kinds of research programmes under its auspices: I. In-house research activity: In-house research activity: Since its inception, the Centre has been undertaking research studies on South Asian/ SAARC countries; and organized national and international seminars. (i) Eleven books, including the two forthcoming ones were brought out by the Centre so far. Others include five reports, a few book reviews, besides the papers published and presented at international and national seminars. Also a few research studies on identified thrust areas were undertaken by the faculty. Books: 1. Journal: The Centre is publishing a bi-annual journal entitled Journal of South Asian Affairs. The journal is aimed at highlighting the contemporary issues, related to South Asia/SAARC and disseminating knowledge on the emerging aspects of regional cooperation. The Centre has so far released four issues of the journal, covering topics on regional, bilateral, and individual member countries of the South Asian /SAARC region. Vol .4. Number 2 : July-December 2008; Vol .1. Number 1 : January-June 2008 (ii) Another feature of the in-house research activity is the organization of Seminars by the Centre. In the direction of organizing Seminars/ Conferences/Symposia, relevant to the current topical issues on South Asia/SAARC, the Centre so far organized seven International and eight National Seminars, three Symposia and one Colloquium. II. Collaborative Activity: Inter-departmental collaborative research programmes is another core activity of the Centre, besides making efforts in the direction of national and international networking. Eminent scholars have been invited under ‘Visiting Faculty’ programme to deliver lectures on contemporary issues related to SAARC/South Asia. In view of the importance of research collaboration with the outside Institutions/ Centres working on SAARC/South Asian studies, the Centre is planning to have meaningful academic interaction with the like-minded institutions/ similar Area Studies Centres of the UGC. Efforts are being made to introduce M.Phil./Ph.D programmes in the Centre. The Centre plans to conduct workshops on South Asia periodically, with a view to familiarize the core issues among the young scholars of South Asian/SAARC countries.
