DEPARTMENT OF METALLURGICAL ENGINEERING PROFILE

The Department of metallurgical Engineering was established in 1981 as part of Mechanical Engineering. During the 25 years of its existence it has emerged as a leader in Metallurgical education in the country. Its glorious past has been written in letters of Gold in the history of Andhra University as the most successful academic program initiated by the University. With an annual intake of 20 undergraduates, over the years it has produced numerous Metallurgical engineers who occupy key positions both in India & abroad. By virtue of being the only Metallurgical Engineering Department in coastal Andhra Pradesh, it caters to the needs of Metallurgical industry there. The Department enjoys a strong University – Industry interaction by way of extending consultancy to the industry in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Technocrats often visit the department and share their expertise with faculty and students. Most of the undergraduate projects are carried out in the industries in and around Visakhapatnam. Besides, the faculty takes up numerous sponsored research projects in association with the industrial and R&D institutes. Impressed with its performance, the National Board of Accreditation accredited the department for 5 years in the year 2004. The ME program offered by the Department in Industrial Metallurgy has been approved by the AICTE in the year 2003. The Department is also the first of its kind to offer M.Tech. program in Nanotechnology. ALUMNI: Of the 450 graduates of the Department, many are well placed in Industry and R&D organizations. Many of them pursued their higher studies in esteemed institutions and universities in India and abroad. The Department houses a Students' Chapter of Indian Institute of Metals (IIM). In collaboration with IIM Chapter, Visakhapatnam, the Department has successfully organized three National meets, Conference of Students, Metallurgical Engineers and Technologists, COSMET- 2000, 01 & 06 and PMMS 2005 and an Indo-US workshop on Texture and Microstructure in Close-Packed Metals and a workshop on Composite Materials in 2006, with active participation from faculty, students and Metallurgists from various industries and institutes
