PROFILE
Established in the year 1932 starting with a three year B.Sc (Hons.) degree course in Physics with an intake of six students, the Department of Physics has grown into one of the biggest departments in India offering Physics courses not only in the University campus but also in about 10 affiliated colleges. The Department of Physics has 7 faculty members with over 160 students besides a large number of research scholars and supporting staff. The Physics Department, from its inception, has been recognized as a reputed centre for research leading toM. Phil. and Ph.D degrees. It has also been recognized as a UGC Centre for Advanced Study (CAS) Phase- II in Solid State Physics, Ultrasonics, Theoretical Physics and Atmospheric and Space Physics. The Department of Physics, located in the heritage building of the University named as JVD College of Science and Technology, is presently offering two different two-year M.Sc courses in Physics and Space Physics. In addition to the research laboratories in Solid State Physics, Material Science and Ultrasonics, the department has two more Ionosphere Research Laboratories, one, situated in the main campus and the other, at Nagarampalem field station about 15 Km from the main campus. All the 7 faculty members of the department, besides teaching, are actively engaged in research in several front line areas and are also guiding students working for their M.Phil and Ph.D research degrees.
